A first-timer’s guide to tfr mat®
Trying a heated workout for the first time can feel intimidating. Will it be too hot? Will I keep up? Will everyone else know the moves?
Here’s the good news: every single person in a TFR Mat® class was a first-timer once. This guide walks you through what to expect at your first class at The Full Routine - the hottest workout studio based in Orange County and Los Angeles.
What Is TFR Mat®?
TFR Mat® is The Full Routine’s signature heated class. It’s a 60-minute, full-body workout comprised of three sections:
The Arms Routine: A warm-up and use of light hand weights to one your arms and shoulders.
The Mat Pilates Routine: Classical mat pilates moves designed to lengthen and tone.
The Weighted Sculpt Routine: Action-packed combinations to transform your entire body.
All of it happens in our heated studio room (up to around 87 degrees!), which warms up your muscles and makes every movement feel a little deeper.
WHAT YOUR FIRST HEATED WORKOUT CLASS WILL FEEL LIKE
If you’ve never taken a heated workout class before, this will be a new and invigorating experience! The studio room is set to roughly 90 degrees, so it’s already toasty when you walk in. As the room warms up further with everyone’s body movement during class, your body will release even more - including with sweat!
We strongly recommend that first-timers bring a big water bottle to fill up as well as a towel, and to listen to their bodies. Take a break if you need it, step outside the room for more water, and remember that everyone starts as a beginner.
HOW TO PREPARE FOR YOUR FIRST TFR MAT® CLASS
First, pack your favorite workout bag with the following: A big water bottle (empty or full - we have hydration stations!), a large towel to cover your mat (a beach towel or mat pilates towel works!), a small towel for facial sweat, workout shoes, and comfortable workout clothes. We’ve got mats at the studio - so don’t worry about that part!
We’re often asked if shoes are required - some clients choose to wear no shoes, but TFR Mat® is more cardio intensive than a traditional mat pilates class. We recommend bringing athletic shoes, and the majority of our attendees will be wearing them alongside you.
Before class, hydrate throughout the day before coming, or start the night before if you’re taking an early morning TFR Mat® class. Arrive to your studio location 10-15 minutes early so our team can help you get set up and you can meet the instructor.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do you offer a non-heated class?
No - TFR Mat® is always taught in our heated studio room. Our room is set to roughly 90 degrees, but often feels much warmer once everyone starts moving. If you are seeking a non-heated experience, you can take TFR Mat® from home with our online classes - TFR On Demand.
